Origins and Lore

Dragonite may be a combination of dragon with knight, night, or Draconite (a pyramid-shaped stone thought to be found in a dragon’s head). Its appearance may be a reference to Japanese dragons, European dragons, or fairy dragons. Its moniker as the ‘Guardian of the Sea’ could also imply that it has characteristics of the Chinese dragon.

Besides that, the different tales related to its origin can be found in the Pokédex entries of several regions.

Dragonite is a bipedal, draconic reptile with pale orange skin. Its eyes are big, and greenish-gray in color, while its snout is round with narrow nostrils. On top of its head, two long, thin antennae emerge, with a little horn positioned in between.

Its cream-colored, striated underbelly reaches from the tip of its long tail to the neck. Its legs and broad arms split up in three claws apiece. The wings have turquoise membranes and are diminutive in comparison to its body.

Dragon Dance Dragonite is an excellent starter for many offensive teams due to its large move pool and strong priority in Extreme Speed. Despite its hefty configuration, Dragonite is a solid all-around Pokémon.

Following a Dragon Dance, a Dragonite may outpace and pose a threat to several common offensive Pokémon, including Meowscarada (the non-choice scarf), Roaring Moon, and even Dragapult when it uses its Joyful nature.

Role in the Pokémon World

Dragonite debuted first as a rather mysterious giant Pokémon in Mystery at the Lighthouse. Bill, the Pokemaniac, was deeply fascinated by its existence.

Major Dragonite Trainers
DrakeIn Hello, Pummelo! and Enter the Dragonite, Drake uses his Dragonite in a full battle against Ash at the Pummelo Stadium.
LanceIn Rage of Innocence, Lance used his Dragonite to defeat and catch the Red Gyarados. Similarly, in The Scuffle of Legends, Dragonite helped stop Groudon and Kyogre.
IrisIn Iris and the Rogue Dragonite!, Iris caught a male Dragonite. He had a notably hostile personality and was initially difficult for Iris to train with.
AshAsh caught a newly evolved Dragonite in A Test in Paradise! who became a prominent part of his team throughout Pokémon Journeys: The Series.

Other episodes with Dragonite’s appearances include:

  • In Mewtwo Strikes Back and Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, a Dragonite comes to deliver an invitation to Ash and his friends from Mewtwo to visit the New Island.
  • In Fangs For Nothin’ and Great Bowls of Fire, a female Dragonite that resided in the Dragon Holy Land belonged to the former Blackthorn Gym Leader who passed away. Clair later caught the same Dragonite at some point before A Pokémon of a Different Color!
  • In The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, Professor Oak used a Dragonite to battle the Mirage Mewtwo but was defeated.
  • In Pursuing a Lofty Goal!, Provo’s Dragonite fought in the Squallville PokéRinger. Dragonite battled against Paul’s Honchkrow and lost after the latter landed a critical hit with Sky Attack.
  • In A Test in Paradise!, multiple Dragonites lived on Dragonite Island. One of them was preyed upon by Team Rocket, but their plan was foiled by the Dragonair that would later turn into Ash’s Dragonite.

Trivia and Fun Facts

  • Although Dragonite was not found in the wild, its capture rate was reduced from 45 to 9 in Pokémon Yellow. Its catch rate returned to 45 in all subsequent games.
  • Prior to the introduction of The Crown Tundra, Pokémon Sword’s second expansion, Dragonite was unavailable, as stated in Kingdra’s Pokédex record in Pokémon Sword.
  • Dragonite is the only Pokémon owned by one of Ash’s companions that he himself captures later in the series.
  • In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Dragonite cannot learn Outrage at Level 41 and must be trained through a Move Reminder instead.
  • Dragonite and Salamence are known to have the highest total base stat among all Flying-type Pokémon (excluding Mega Evolutions and Legendary Pokémon).

Given its potency and adaptability, Dragonite is a popular pick for offensive and large teams. It can easily operate a Dragon Dance or Choice Band set on high offense and DragMag squads. With the right strategy and experience, it can become an effortless Dragon to work with.
