Psychic Pokémon: What are They Strong and Weak Against?

The Psychic type is one of the 18 types and is considered very calm and intelligent, making them one of the most admired Pokémon in the series. 

They are named after scientific discoveries such as Deoxys and mythological words and characters such as Abra and Kadabra. A total of 134 Pokémon belong to the Psychic type, providing it with a huge fan base. 

Although they are special creatures, they come with certain weaknesses. Let’s have a glance at their characteristics, types, and what they are strong and weak against. 

Firstly, let us understand their basic characteristics. 

Characteristics of Psychic Type Pokémon

A general overview of Psychic Pokémon can be derived from their name itself, which means “related to mind”. However, certain other distinguished features of this type are:

• They have unique powers related to the mind and thoughts.
• Their power includes reducing weight to increase agility, teleportation, power to calm themselves, emitting healing impulses, employing hypnotic powers, and shooting lasers using the power of a prism. 
• They possess the ability to execute high special attacks and low physical attacks, i.e., energy-based powers or elemental powers, with less probability of direct contact (that is prominent in physical attacks). 
• There are a total of 79 types of Psychic moves (discussed below).

The moves differ between Pokémon and are based on the type, i.e., whether a Pokémon is a pure or mixed type. 

Now let’s go through the major types of Psychic Pokémon. 

Types of Psychic Pokémon

The variety of Psychic Pokémon depends on the purity and mixture of the types of the Pokémon. 

1. Pure Type (Psychic) — These Pokémon belong solely to the psychic type since their inception. They stand at an advantage in the battle for having fewer weaknesses than the dual-type Pokémon. Some examples of pure psychic type. Some examples are Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Mega Alakazam, Drawzee, and Hypno.

2. Dual type (Psychic) — These Pokémon belong to two types, with one type mandatory being Psychic. They come with the ability to learn more types of moves, making them more versatile fighters in battle. Some examples of Dual type (Psychic) Pokémon are Rapidash (Psychic Fairy), Articuno (Psychic Flying Type), Raichu (Electric Psychic), and Slow Poke (Water Psychic).

3. Changed Type (Psychic) — These Pokémon were originally psychic, but later changed to dual type during the evolution of the successive generation. For example, Mr. Mime was Psychic till the 4th gen, but later changed to Psychic Fairy type. 

Apart from the type, The psychic Pokémon have other specifications too, that affect their performance in the battle.

The above moves aren’t sufficient in a battle. Every Pokémon is stronger and or weaker than certain other types. 

Keeping Psychic Pokémon at the center, let’s find out what they are stronger and weaker against. 

Strengths and Weaknesses of Psychic-Type Pokémon

All Psychic-type Pokémon have powers of a mental genre rather than physical. But this comes with an advantage and a cost. 

Here is a synopsis of the strengths and weaknesses of the Psychic Pokémon in terms of attacking and defense against opponents.

A radical change was observed after the release of 2nd Gen when the unchallenged Psychic type was countered by Dark-type and Steel-type Pokémon. 

From 2nd Gen, their power was put in line with other Pokémon types by making them stronger against Fighting type and Poison type and weaker against Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type Pokémon.

A brief analysis of its strengths and weaknesses will make the picture more clear.

What is Psychic Strong Against? 

The Psychic Pokémon had great potential in Gen 1 but were dragged back to put in the line in succeeding generations. In Gen 1, they were stronger against many types, but now that list was shortened to only Poison-type and Fighting-type Pokémon.

Also, if they find a Psychic terrain (introduced in the 7th generation) and the opponent is grounded, their power increases by 30%, giving them an edge over the opponent. 

Poison Type Pokémon

Inspired by venomous animals and plants, they represent toxicity (Ekans and Arbok) and pollution (Garbodor and Muk). Their exclusive move includes “Toxic,” while other moves are liquid ooze, stench, and corrosion.

As Poison Pokémon are more physical, they can be easily conquered by Psychic Pokémon which possess less physical but more mind-driven powers.

Fighting Type Pokémon

Fighting types are strong and muscle-dominated Pokémon that have no exclusive ability but the shared ability of Mind’s Eye and Scrappy. Some examples of Fighting-type Pokémon are Mankey, Primeape, and Mahcop. 

As the pervasively affirmed fact “Mind over Muscle” inspires the relation between Psychic and Fighting, Psychic can overpower Fighting-type Pokémon with their intellect and mind powers. 

The Psychic and Fighting types are also seen as opposite to each other in their character and defense and attack abilities. 

Although the Psychic Pokémon can subdue the above-stated types, there are some types they become weaker against. Let’s discuss them. 

What are Psychic Type Pokémon Weak Against?

In Gen 1, the Bug Type was the only weakness of the Psychic type. They were also immune to the Ghost-type and resistant to Fighting and Psychic-type moves. Later, their power was curtailed in successive generations. 

But what is effective against Psychic Pokémon now? Here is the answer.

The Psychic Pokémon are related to the mind and the mind has an abrupt fear of bugs, ghosts, and the darkness. With this same logic applied in Pokémon, the Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type Pokémon are super effective against Psychic Pokémon. 

Here are some moves related to these types. 

• Dark-type moves – Dark Pulse, Dark Void and Embargo
• Bug-type moves – Bug Buz, and Fury Cutter
• Ghost-type moves – Curse, Hex, and Lick

Let’s go through them one by one. 

Dark Type Pokémon

Dark-type Pokémon were introduced in 2nd Gen to counter the undisputed Psychic Type Pokémon of 1st Gen. Dark Pokémon are super effective against Psychic and Ghosts types. 

Some best Dark-type Pokémon are Roaring Moon, Incineroar, and Urshifu and some effective dark-type moves are Crunch, Beat-up, Foul Play, Fling, and Flatter.

Bug Type Pokémon

Bug-type moves are effective against Psychic-type and Dark-type Pokémon. As bugs can see through the dark and the mind is innately fearful of bugs, this logic works in Pokémon for Bug-type Pokémon to drive out Dark and Psychic Pokémon.

Beedrill, Kleavor, Buzzwole, and Shedinja are some renowned Bug-type Pokémon and some Bug-type moves are Fell Stinger, Bug Bite, and Powder. 

Ghost Type Pokémon

They are effective against Ghost-type and Psychic-type moves. In the 1st Gen, Ghost-type moves had no impact over Psychic type, but later they became super effective against Psychic Pokémon. 

As the mind is afraid of Ghosts, it makes the analogy between Psychic and Ghosts more relatable. 

Galarian Corsola, Chandelure, Cofagrigus, and Dusknoir are known as best in this type; and Shadow Force, Confuse Ray, Phantom Force, and Shadow Claws are some widely acclaimed Ghost-type moves. 

Hence, next time you plan a fierce battle, stay cautious if you find a Ghost, Bug, or Dark-type Pokémon opposite to your Psychic Pokémon.
