Fans are very familiar with Gyarados. It is one of the original Pokémon introduced in the first generation. But how much do you know about this Pokémon?

Gyarados can cause a lot of destruction and are also known as the ‘Deity of Destruction.’ Physical features like its skin are more complex than steel, and its fangs are strong enough to crush stones.

About Gyarados

About Gyarados

Gyarados was introduced in Generation I. It is well known for its destructive nature and dragon-like features. Although it’s a water-type Pokémon and can’t fly properly, it is classified as a flying-type Pokémon

Misty owned a Gyarados during the Pokémon Adventures series, which she later traded in the show. Gyarados are considerably tall Pokémon and fast swimmers.

Gyarados Lore and Origin

Gyarados Origin

Gyarados are evolved from Magikarp. This transformation ties in with Chinese mythology, where carp fish were supposed to leap over the Dragon Gate, and the Jade Emperor would instantly turn those who could do this into dragons.

Gyarados is inspired by dragons that transform after leaping through the Dragon Gate. It is also said that Gyarados looks like the famous Chinese sea dragon Wani. Wani was considered a dragon-like sea monster who ruled the ocean’s depths.

Gyarados is a big blue dragon/serpentine-like Pokémon. It has visible features like fangs, sharp teeth, and head horns. Its face looks like a shark and has a fish-like tail. Gyarados are always angry and don’t like feeling threatened or invaded.

There’s been a special red Gyarados. It was red because of Team Rocket’s forced evolution into a regular Magikarp. The red Gyarado is as powerful as any regular Gyarado, but its red color makes it look more dangerous.

Gyarados Evolutionary Line

Gyarados evolutionary line

Gyarados evolved from Magikarp after level 20. Later, it can be turned into Mega Gyarados with the help of Gyaradosite. Gyarados starts as fish that can only make regular attacks. But it transforms into one of the most powerful water-type Pokémon after a certain level.

Magikarp

Magikarp is a water-type Pokémon. It is a redfish with a fin that looks like a crown. Magikarps are usually weak and easy to catch. They seem like dumb Pokémon, which they are. James from Team Rocket had a Magikarp, which was a little use. In one of the episodes, Ash and Brock dreamed about eating a Magikarp, but Misty quickly shut down the idea.

Magikarp is weak and has low stats, but it can float on water for a few weeks and won’t die. It doesn’t need too much water to survive.

Gyarados

A Pokémon that could go berserk at any moment and cause total destruction, Gyarados are one of the most feared Pokémon because once it starts destroying, it doesn’t stop until it has destroyed everything in sight. It is a water/flying type Pokémon. Because of how it looks, some people say it is a dragon type as well.

Magikarp turns into Gyarados after level 20. This is a vast transformation, given that Magikarp is one of the weakest Pokémon ever. Catching a Gyarados is another stress because these are very powerful Pokemon and can use various attack types. Two types these Pokemon are weak against are Rock and Electric.

Mega Gyarados

Mega Gyarados are rare and can only be obtained when evolved using Gyaradosite. They are fierce and solid. Mega Gyarados are way more powerful than regular Gyarados and are hard-to-control Pokémon. However, once someone can control them, they are proven to be tough and powerful opponents.

As for its appearance, it is visually distinguished from a regular Gyarados. Its fin size increases and it takes on more of a fish form. The horns on its forehead also grow taller, and it gets red spots on its body.

Gyarados Moves and Abilities

Gyarados moves

Gyarados is a water/flying type Pokémon, but its abilities and moves are not limited to these two types.

Intimidate– Gyarados is a significant and scary-looking Pokémon, so it takes full advantage of it when it enters a battle. Gyarados intimidates their opponents with his move Intermediate, delaying their attack or putting them off balance.

Different Attack Types—Gyarados can learn different attack types, such as poison, thunder, fire, and more, making them powerful Pokémon.

Twister– This is a dragon-type attack often used as the finishing blow. Gyarados can jump high and land on their opponent, causing significant damage.

Dragon Dance: This move helps in both defence and attack. Gyarados can use this attack to dodge their enemy easily and attack with double force after dodging.

Hyper Beam: It is Gyarados’s signature move. A powerful beam of light shot from its mouth dramatically damages the opponent. It is a normal type move, but Pokémon with good stats can make it very powerful.

Gyarados Egg Moves

This might not be a shock, but Gyarados don’t learn any moves from its breeding process. There is no point in breeding a Gyarados because it would need to be breaded with a female Magikarp, and the offspring will also be like any other Magikarp.

Catching a Magikarp is far easier than the whole breeding process because the outcome will be the same. But if fans want to try, they can catch a good-natured female Magikarp or Ditto and, while breeding, give an Everstone to any of the Pokémon.

This process can increase your chance of getting a trait passed down to the offspring by 50% (Magikarp). However, it is still not for sure or a 100% guarantee that it will work, but it would be fun to try.

Gyarados Moveset and in-Game Strategy

Gyarados is a powerful addition to any team. But figuring out what moveset to use is a bit of work. To make that easy, we are creating a table mentioning everything fans should know about Gyarados’ moveset and strategy.

Gyarados has some of the best offenses and defense attacks regarding fighting. All the above moves can be beneficial and lead to victory in the game.

However, the waterfall and hydro pump combo attack is considered Gyarados’s most powerful attack combo. This combination alone has a CP of 3,391.

Gyarados Role in the Pokémon World

Gyarados are dangerous Pokémon because they can get angry quickly and destroy anything that comes their way. They are said to be the destroyers of Pokémon World. Gyarados has always been a destroyer, and it has been said he has destroyed several villages, mountains, cities, and fields. However, the reason for this is that Gyarados felt threatened by human behavior.

It’s been proven that whenever humans fight among themselves, a Gyarados appears and destroys everything. Humans make Gyarados feel threatened, and since these are violent, they go on a rampage. But Gyarados can be a good companion only if someone can make this Pokémon trust them. They are strong and are often very loyal to their trainers.

A few of the notable Gyarados and their trainers:

  • Misty’s Gyarados
  • Riley’s Gyarados
  • Lance’s Red Gyarados
  • Lucy’s Gyarados
  • Sailor Paul’s Gyarados

Trivia and Fun Facts about Gyarados

  • Gyarados are said to have a long history of destruction. They are known to destroy a whole neighborhood if they get mad.
  • Its feature makes it look like a crossbreed between a serpent and a dragon. Gyarados also have fangs that can crush hard objects.
  • Not all trainers can control their Gyarados completely because of their nature, only those trainers who can gain the trust of this Pokémon can use them.
  • Mega Gyarados can be more violent if they can’t be controlled. As it evolves to Mega Gyarados it gets more short temperate causing it to go rampage.
  • Gyarados are not bloodthirsty. They only act violently when they feel threatened.
  • Sometimes, Gyarado’s destruction can last up to a month.

Conclusion

Gyarados is a powerful Pokémon, and it’s undeniable that it has played a significant role in the series. They might be hot-headed, but they are still one of the strongest Pokémon.
