Origins and Lore

The word Gardevoir may be a fusion of Garde, a French word meaning ‘guard’, and Devoir, meaning duty. It may also refer to the word Voir which means ‘to see’, referring to its Psychic abilities.

Gardevoir appears to draw inspiration from the ideas of chivalry and empathy, with its design being taken from a female ballet dancer and a knight. Whereas, the structure of Mega Gardevoir might be referenced from a ballroom dancer.

Its flowing, white form is suggestive of ghosts or spirits like a White Lady, while its fairy traits and protective attitude toward its trainer seem to be nurtured by guardian angels.

From Gen III, it imprints a new story of its origin in the Pokédex entries of different regions.

Biology and Behavior

Gardevoir is one of the few Pokémon with a humanoid form.

Its long dress-like torso, encircled by long, white frills, with its pointed, slender legs give it a feminine appearance. Its small spikes behind its eyes resemble a masquerade mask, with its hair arranged in a bob cut partly shadowing its eyes.

It has crimson horns on its front and back, which seem to resemble a heart puncturing its chest. It is said that the horns are directly linked to the heart.

One thing to note is that the male parent must know the particular egg move before breeding. What’s good is that if you’re playing the Scarlet/Violet version, you can breed with any Pokémon having the egg move, in picnics.

Training and Battling — Type Effectiveness

Gardevoir always remains in the spotlight for its exceptional coverage in Sp. Attack and Sp. Defense. Given its Psychic and Fairy powers, it is completely immune to Dragon types, which is a major threat to most other Pokémon. However, it still stands weak against the Ghost, Poison, and Steel type.

Moves and Abilities

A Gardevoir can have either Synchronize or Trace as its primary ability. However, it always features Telepathy as a hidden ability.

Synchronize
Battle EffectIf the foe causes a status condition (burn, paralysis, or poison) to the ability bearer, then the foe receives the same status as well.
External EffectIn case the ability bearer is leading the party, there is a 50% possibility of the appearing wild Pokémon to be of the same nature.
Trace
Battle EffectAllows the Pokémon to copy the foe’s ability.
Telepathy
Battle EffectAbility bearer doesn’t take damage from any attacks of its teammates in a duo or multi-party battle.

The Traceability is known to be the best combination for a Gardevoir, as it allows copying abilities of possibly stronger opponents. Given this, it can mimic Levitate from Flygon, which is a fairly serious threat, to equate the advantage.

However, with a pretty low Defense, it is usually 2HKOed by the most common hits, making it prone to being revenge killed. Special Defensive Pokémon including Cresselia and Snorlax can easily inflict a status problem or severe damage.
